Overview
Dr. Cheung was born and raised in Orange County, California and is 4th generation Asian American. She did her undergraduate work at UCLA where she received a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and was awarded Magna Cum Laude honors. She went on to pursue a Masters in Public Health in Health Education and Health Policy at UCLA, where she was also awarded the distinction of Highest Honors. She completed her medical school training at UC San Diego School of Medicine in 2004, and completed her residency training at White Memorial Medical Center/Loma Linda University in Los Angeles where she was Chief Resident in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Cheung returned to her UCLA roots and was accepted into the Endocrinology Fellowship program at UCLA, where she completed an additional two years of subspecialty training. In fellowship, she had the opportunity to work with world class endocrinologists and participate in the care of patients in all aspects of endocrinology, including diabetes, thyroid disease, and pituitary. During fellowship, she presented posters and abstracts at the Endo Society Annual Meeting and the American College of Physicians conference.
After fellowship, Dr. Cheung joined a successful endocrinology private practice in Torrance, CA and later became the owner of the practice, where she continued to be dedicated to providing quality care to her patients. She joined UCLA Health in 2012, and is now one of the endocrinologists at the UCLA South Bay Endocrine, Thyroid and Diabetes Center. Her practice is general endocrinology including diabetes and thyroid disease. Her area of interest is thyroid cancer and she performs ultrasounds and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations of thyroid nodules in the clinic on a daily basis to evaluate thyroid nodules for malignancy. She has published articles and case reports on diabetes, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, parathyroid disease, and pituitary.
She is an active member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) one of the largest national clinical endocrine organizations - serving on committees for diabetes and thyroid management, as well as thyroid nodule and thyroid biopsy expert reviewer for certification ECNU certifying endocrinologists in the skills of thyroid ultrasound and thyroid biopsy.
She has been on the planning committee for the California Chapter conference for a decade bringing leading endocrinologists and endocrine surgeons together to share their expertise with community endocrinologists. She is the 2020-2022 Vice President of the Clinical Association of California Endocrinologists, state clinical endocrine society dedicated to educating endocrinologists and primary care providers in diabetes and general endocrinology. She is also been for several years the co-chair of the UCLA Diabetes Symposium, an annual diabetes conference focused on educating providers in the field of clinical diabetes management. She has served as a speaker on topics in diabetes and thyroid disease at a number of local and national conferences.
She is the proud mother to twin boys. During her free time, she likes to cook gourmet meals for her family and friends. She speaks fluent Cantonese Chinese.
